Hyderabad: Rajasthan Royals captain Rahul Dravid said he was shocked, disappointed and distressed by spot-fixing scandal which led to the arrest of three of the team’s players.
“I am shocked, disappointed and distressed over the events that resulted in arrests last night and this morning. Rajasthan Royals is a special team and we have always operated like a family so this is devastating. Spot fixing and corruption hang over the game of cricket which is extremely sad and dangerous,” he said in a statement read out at the Rajiv Gandhi international stadium here Thursday evening before the team’s last league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
He said the BCCI and Rajasthan Royals take the same zero tolerance view of the situation. “The Rajasthan Royals owners and management have made their zero tolerance view clear on every possible occasion and I am sure that they will support any action taken. ”
“For me as a captain and leader I have to focus on ensuring the team fulfill their enormous potential and continue to play in Rajasthan Royals way. Our players are devastated that our performances may have been affected as they have the desire to win and this has been evident throughout the tournament. The players and people around the team are hurting,” he said.
“I hope that our fans will get behind us and we become stronger as a unit which often happens in the times of adversity. This has been tough day for me, team and for the cricket,” the captain added.

Thiruvananthapuram: All parties should come together to work for the development of Kerala and the Congress was willing to take the lead in starting such a dialogue, the party’s state president Ramesh Chennithala said Thursday.
Chennithala told reporters that he had said at the beginning of his month-long campaign of the state that there would be a change in political thinking once it ended.
‘We, the Congress party, are ready to join hands with all other parties for the upliftment of our state. We should work together for our state,’ Chennithala said.
He began his road tour April 18 and ends it at the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border near here Thursday night.
‘We have no hesitation in taking the lead in starting a dialogue with all other political parties and we wish to know if the CPI-M is ready for it,’ he said, referring to the main opposition party.
‘We want to move away from the conventional style in which parties work. We feel the need of the hour is to work for the needs of the people.’
The grand finale of the cross-state campaign, which would have passed through all 140 assembly constituencies, will be on Saturday evening when national party vice president Rahul Gandhi addresses party workers here.
Responding to reports that he might join the Oommen Chandy government, Chennithala said no such talks had taken place.
‘What Chandy said is true. If I wanted, I could have joined the cabinet before,’ said the veteran leader who has been president of the state unit for nine years.
He said the Congress, unlike the CPI-M, was open to criticism.
‘Yes, it’s true that Hindu social group leaders and minority community leaders do criticise… and while we are very soft on them, the CPI-M is not. We are open to criticism and maintain absolute calm because we are not a party that would gag those who take us on. This should not be seen as our weakness,’ said Chennithala.
On Saturday, the Chandy government celebrates its second anniversary. Speculation is rife that Chennithala will join Chandy’s cabinet, a move aimed at the majority Hindus in the state.

New Delhi: The Mumbai underworld is involved in spot-fixing in Indian Premier League (IPL) matches in which Indian fast bowler S. Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates were arrested, Delhi Police chief Neeraj Kumar Thursday said.
“We had information that Mumbai underworld is indulging in match-fixing or spot-fixing and have contacted a number of bookies and some players,” Neeraj Kumar said, giving details of the arrests of three players and 11 bookies in Mumbai late Wednesday night.
“There are overseas connections and there is evidence to prove that the underworld is involved,” he said at the crowded press conference.
“There is no concrete evidence of any members of underworld don, Dawood Ibrahim so far. But, it can’t be ruled out,” he added.
He also said these bookies used to spot the ‘vulnerable’ players who can be contacted easily. But only these three players came in their net.
“In April this year, secret information was received by the Special Cell that some members of the Mumbai underworld are involved in match fixing in the ongoing IPL matches with the active participation of some unidentified conduits, bookies, players – some of who are based in Delhi and national capital region,” the top cop said.
He said the suspects were kept under watch during which it was found that match fixers and bookies from Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab and some players participating in IPL were conspiring in indulge in spot-fixing.
The Delhi Police team finally arrested Sreesanth and his Rajasthan Royals colleagues Ankeet Chavan and Ajit Chandila for cheating and criminal conspiracy and the 11 bookies.
“The names of these three players came to light… we waited for the situation when all three of them could be pinned down together. We are not ruling out more arrests. They are not players, including international players, but bookies,” Neeraj Kumar added.
“Our team was present in all these matches. Last night our team was camping in Mumbai and soon after the match the decision was taken and the three players were arrested and so were the 11 bookies from different parts of the country,” he said.
Armed with the video clippings of the give-away runs, the police chief also read out transcripts of the conversations between the players and the bookies.
He said they have audio clippings of 100 hours as evidence.

New Delhi: A “shocked and saddened” BCCI on Thursday suspended pacer S Sreesanth and two other Rajasthan Royals players accused of spot-fixing in the IPL and vowed to take “strictest action” against them if found guilty after an inquiry.
“As of now, the 3 players viz; Ankeet Chavan, Ajit Chandila and S. Sreesanth stand suspended pending enquiry. All information required to bring the persons involved to book will be collected and strictest action will be taken, if found guilty,” the BCCI said in a statement issued by Secretary Sanjay Jagdale.
A special cell of the Delhi police arrested Sreesanth and his teammates — Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan — along with seven bookies last night after their team’s IPL match against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.
The cricketers and bookies have been charged under sections 420 (cheating) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and are being flown in to Delhi for further questioning.
The Board said it would cooperate with the Delhi Police during the course of investigation.
“The BCCI is shocked and saddened at the recent developments. The BCCI has zero tolerance to corruption. We will offer all cooperation to the Delhi police and all other authorities in their investigations in this matter. The IPL Governing Council has met and decided that the cricketers found involved will be dealt with severely,” the Board stated.
The police have also arrested seven bookies in Mumbai and three bookies in Delhi in connection with the same case. They are looking for two more bookies in Delhi.
The Board said it was unfortunate to see players indulging in corruption despite getting good contracts from their franchises.
“The BCCI engages the services of the anti corruption wing of the ICC to educate and monitor players and support staff in prevention of corruption of any form in the game,” it said.
“In fact, it is wholly unfortunate that despite such education, best playing conditions and terms of engagement offered, some players seem to be indulging in such activity,” it added.

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt today surrendered before the designated TADA court here to serve his three-and-a-half year sentence in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast case. Accompanied by his wife Manyata and film maker Mahesh
Bhatt, the actor arrived at the court sporting a red ’tilak’ on his forehead. As soon as Dutt appeared before the court, formalities
began for his surrender. The court commenced the process for the identification of Dutt, whose conviction was upheld by the
Supreme Court recently.Sporting a white kurta and jeans, Dutt waved to the crowd before getting into his car outside Imperial Heights building at Pali Hill in suburban Bandra.
As soon as Dutt’s vehicle arrived near the court, it was surrounded by people, including press photographers. Bhatt first emerged out of the car and with folded hands requested the media personnel to move away so that Dutt was able to reach the court. After much persuasion, the way was cleared for Dutt to reach the court. Several fans of Dutt waited patiently outside the court for the actor to arrive. Police had maintained strong bandobast in the court premises as well as at the actor’s
residence in Bandra in the wake of threat to Dutt’s life. While Dutt had told TADA court earlier that he faced threat to his life from fundamental groups, Arthur Road Central Jail authorities received an anonymous letter few days back saying Dutt would be harmed if he was lodged there.
The Supreme Court in its March 21 verdict awarded five years’ imprisonment to the 53-year-old actor for illegal possession of arms. The apex court on May 14 refused to grant him more time to surrender. On May 10, the Supreme Court had dismissed Dutt’s plea seeking review of its judgement on his conviction and the five-year jail term.

London: David Beckham is to retire from professional football at the end of the season, his representative announced on Thursday.
The 38-year-old midfielder has played for Manchester United, Real Madrid, Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan, as well as winning 115 caps for England, and recently won the French Ligue 1 championship with Paris Saint-Germain.
‘I’m thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level,’ he said, in comments reported by the BBC.
‘If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club, Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times, and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy.
‘I’m fortunate to have realised those dreams.’
Beckham’s title triumph with PSG made him the first British player to have won league championships in four different countries, after previous successes in England, Spain and the United States.
He won six league titles, two FA Cups and the 1999 Champions League with United, before joining Madrid in 2003, where he won the Spanish league title four years later.
Beckham moved to Los Angeles in 2007, winning two MLS Cup titles with the Galaxy, but spent two loan spells at Milan and then returned to Europe in January this year, when he signed a short-term deal with PSG.
He captained England between 2000 and 2006, played at three World Cups, and has played more times for his country than any other outfield player

Kochi : A Kerala court Tuesday expressed its displeasure over the manner in which the CBI conducted a probe into the involvement of two Kerala Police officials in an alleged custody death.
The Ernakulam chief judicial magistrate, while hearing a plea filed by the brother of murder suspect and victim Sampath, criticised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)for not conducting the probe in a scientific manner.
The probe was conducted against two policemen, including then deputy inspector general of police Vijay Sakhare.
The court told the CBI that their report was incomplete and asked them to conduct further investigation.
Sampath was arrested for allegedly murdering Sheela, an Indian Administrative Service official’s sister, in Palakkad March 23, 2010.
His family alleged he was tortured by police due to which he died a few days later.
The Kerala High Court ordered a CBI probe into the case on a plea filed by Sampath’s brother. The probe agency arrested some Kerala police officials after initiating the probe but later gave them a clean chit.

Chennai : India’s atomic power plant operator, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) has shifted the commissioning of the first 1,000 MW unit at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP) to June 2013.
According to NPCIL’s website, the first unit, whose physical progress is at 99.66 percent, will be commissioned next month, not in May as earlier announced.
Soon after the Supreme Court gave its nod to the project May 6, NPCIL officials were confident of getting the necessary regulatory clearances from Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) and commissioning the plant by the end of this month.
The NPCIL is setting up the project in Kudankulam in Tirunelveli district around 650 km from Chennai, with two Russian-made reactors of generating capacity 1,000-MW each.
Fearing for their safety in the wake of nuclear plant accident in Fukushima in Japan, villagers in the vicinity under the banner of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) are opposing the project.
The KNPP is an outcome of the inter-governmental agreement between India and erstwhile Soviet Union in 1988. However, construction only began in 2001.
The project majorly suffered delays due non-sequential supplies of components from Russian vendors.
Originally the scheduled date of commercial operation was December 2007.

New Delhi : Another sex scandal has hit the Indian Navy with the wife of an officer alleging her husband tortured her mentally and physically and forced her to sleep with his colleagues. Defence Minister A.K. Antony has ordered a probe.
According to a source, the woman’s father has written to the navy and the defence ministry on April 25 with the complaints. Antony in an address to naval commanders, urged them to ‘take sternest possible action against those who tarnish the image and prestige of the Armed Forces, whenever such incident come to their notice’. The minister has asked the navy to probe the allegations.
The navy has ordered an investigation against the husband, a lieutenant commander, the source told IANS.

His wife has left her husband’s home. They had married in February 2012 and have filed for divorce with mutual consent, the source added.
