Chennai:Hyundai Motor India is planning to launch up to four new models in the next two years, including a compact SUV, to enhance its position in the market. The company, which is slated to introduce a new compact car later this year, is also mulling taking on Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire and Honda Cars India’s Amaze with a new sub-four metre sedan. ‘Compact SUV is a very lucrative segment India. I think we are a bit late but we are developing a compact SUV to be launched soon,’ Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) Managing Director and CEO Bo Shin Seo said here. Company officials said the compact SUV is part of
HMIL’s strategy to launch up to four new models in the next two years.
When asked if the company planned to launch a sub-four metre sedan from the same platform as its upcoming compact car codenamed BA, Seo said :’That’s a different car.’He declined to share further details but sources said the entry level sedan could hit the market between 2014 and 2015. Dzire and Amaze qualify for the excise duty benefit, enjoyed by small cars in India. At present, any car with a petrol engine capacity under 1,200 cc or diesel engine under 1,500 cc, but length shorter than four metres, attracts an excise duty of 12 per cent.
Besides, HMIL is also studying the multi-purpose vehicles (MPV) segment, where Maruti has tasted success with Ertiga.
‘The MPV segment is also fast growing, we are definitely looking at it but our priority will be the compact SUV,’ Seo said.
On the upcoming compact car, he said apart the model will be positioned between the company’s i10 and premium hatchback i20. ‘Apart from the domestic market, we will be exporting it. We expect it to be our largest selling model,’ Seo said.
At present the i10 is HMIL’s top selling model and it clocked about 1.6 lakh units last year. When asked about the sales expectations for 2013, he said: ‘The market continues to be tough in India and this year we are looking at about 2-3 per cent growth in domestic volumes.’ In 2012, HMIL had sold around 3.8 lakh units in the domestic market and around 2.5 lakh units were exported. The company is the second-largest carmaker in India after Maruti Suzuki.

Mahindra & Mahindra's automotive and farm equipment president Pawan Goenka poses in a HyAlfa at its launch at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.
The world’s first hydrogen-powered three-wheeler, ‘HyAlfa’, was showcased at the 11th Auto Expo in New Delhi on Monday. Part of a development project dubbed ‘DelHy 3w’, a fleet of 15 HyAlfa three-wheelers will run on an experimental basis at Pragati Maidan, where a hydrogen refuelling station has also been set up.
India Trade Organisation Promotion (ITPO) will use the vehicles on an experimental basis.
The HyAlfa has been developed under a joint project by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) International Centre for Hydrogen Energy Technologies (ICHET), Mahindra & Mahindra and IIT-Delhi, with support from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. “The aim of this project is to convert vehicles so that they can carry and use hydrogen — a carbon-free fuel — and thus remove all pollutants,” Mahindra & Mahindra president (Automotive and Farm Equipment Sectors) Pawan Goenka told reporters in New Delhi.
He said the vehicle is not yet ready for commercial production and further fine-tuning will be required before moving in that direction.
“Moreover, we also have to look at commercial viability of running a hydrogen-powered three-wheeler as the cost of hydrogen will be around Rs 250 per kg, which is not affordable at all,” he said.
Asked about the possible price of HyAlfa, he said, “When the product is on mass production,it will cost Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 more than a CNG three-wheeler.”
On an average, a CNG three-wheeler costs close to Rs 2 lakh.
Commenting on the development, UNIDO-ICHET Managing Director Mustafa Hatipoglu said the DelHy 3W projects aims to demonstrate hydrogen technologies developed by Indian partners for the Indian transport sector.
Project coordinator IIT-Delhi professor LM Das said HyAlfa marks a journey of 20 years from “laboratory to land”.ITPO chairperson-cum-managing director Rita Menon said the hydrogen-powered three-wheeler could play a role in moving toward a newer, sustainable and eco-friendly mode of transportation.
“We are happy to be a part of this project and are specially excited about the cargo version,” she said, adding that her organisation plans to submit a report within three months on the vehicle’s performance to the project organisers.

It seems that the famous tag for the first ever smallest car in India – Nano would be removed soon. The chief of Tata Groups, Ratan Tata expressed his disgrace over the tag – “Poor man’s car”. Speaking about the current status of sales on Nano in India, Ratan Tata on Thursday, Jan 5 claimed that the company would do everything to undo the tag which has been circulated in the market.
Mr Tata, however, claimed that their original tag line for the smallest car was – an affordable family car and not a poor man’s car.
Expressing his belief on the tagline given by the company while launching Nano, Tata said, “The launches of similar small cars by others vindicate our belief that this segment was missing in the product line.”
Talking about the price rate of Nano and other plans of Tata Motors, Mr Tata also informed, “not much in competition with others as far as pricing of it is concerned.”
However, Mr Tata rejected to accept that Nano was a “flop” project launched by the Tatas. Informing about their next step to rejig the car’s position in the country, Mr Tata stated, “Current upgrade should help resolve the problem… upgrade will resolve issue relating to problematic supply from vendors. Upgrade will also resolve the earlier issues and also take in customer feedback. We will look at variants of models to move up the value chain.”

Hyundai Motors India is said to be planning to build the only models it is currently importing as CBUs so that their selling price can be reduced. The two models are the Sonata premium sedan and the Santa Fe premium SUV. These two models are Hyundai’s highest priced models and the reason behind this is the high import duties imposed on imported cars.
Sales of these two models have not been very high owing to their high price. The Sonata is Hyundai answer to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. This car is a spacious and powerful sedan and is considered as Hyundai’s flagship model in India. The sonata’s price of Rs.17.73 lakhs was found to be expensive for a Hyundai. But if the car is built in India as a CKD, the lower import tax will reduce its price and make it more attractive to buyers.
The Hyundai Santa Fe SUV is also in the same position as the Sonata. Its space, seating capacity, power and performance make it a very durable SUV but its price tag make people compare it with premium SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and the BMW X5 and here the Santa Fe looses out. If it is built in India it is expected to offer a stiff competition to the above mentioned SUVs and also other SUVs such as the Renault Koleos and the Mahindra XUV 500.
Hyundai has already started some local production of the Santa Fe in august but it will move to a fuller scale next year. We can see reduction of Rs5 lakhs to Rs.7 lakhs in the price of the SUV. The Korean carmaker has said these two models will see an upward swing in sales once local production begins.
