Paris: France handed the presidency to leftist Francois Hollande, a champion of government stimulus programs who says the state should protect the downtrodden — a victory that could deal a death blow to the drive for austerity that has been the hallmark of Europe in recent years.
Mild and affable, the president-elect inherits a country deep in debt and divided over how to integrate immigrants while preserving its national identity. Markets will closely watch his initial moves as president.
Hollande portrayed himself as a vehicle for change across Europe.
“In all the capitals … There are people who, thanks to us, are hoping, are looking to us, and want to finish with austerity,” he told exuberant crowds of supporters in a speech early this morning at Paris’ Place de la Bastille. “You are a movement lifting up everywhere in Europe, and perhaps the world.”
The party reached into the night on the iconic plaza of the French Revolution, with revelers waving all kinds of flags and climbing the base of its central column. Leftists are overjoyed to have one of their own in power for the first time since Socialist Francois Mitterrand was president from 1981 to 1995.
Hollande narrowly defeated the hard-driving, attention-getting Nicolas Sarkozy, an America-friendly leader who led France through its worst economic troubles since World War II but whose policies and personality proved too bitter for many voters to swallow.
He will take office no later than May 16.
Sarkozy is the latest victim of a wave of voter anger over spending cuts in Europe that has ousted governments and leaders in the past couple of years.
In Greece, a parliamentary vote yesterday was seen as critical to the country’s prospects for pulling out of a deep financial crisis felt in world markets. A state election in Germany and local elections in Italy were seen as tests of support for the national governments’ policies.
In France, with 95% of the vote counted, official results showed Hollande with 51.6% of the vote compared with Sarkozy’s 48.4%, the Interior Ministry said. The turnout was a strong 81%.
“Too many divisions, too many wounds, too many breakdowns and divides have separated our fellow citizens. This is over now,” Hollande said in his victory speech, alluding to the divisive Sarkozy presidency. “The foremost duty of the president of the Republic is to unite … In order to face the challenges that await us.”
Those challenges are legion, and begin with Europe’s debt crisis.
Hollande has said his first act after the election will be to write a letter to other European leaders calling for a renegotiation of a budget-trimming treaty aimed at bringing the continent’s economies closer together. Hollande wants to allow for government-funded stimulus programs in hopes of restarting growth, arguing that debts will only get worse if Europe’s economies don’t start growing again.
Sarkozy and Germany’s Angela Merkel spearheaded the cost-cutting treaty, and many have worried over potential conflict within the Franco-German “couple” that underpins Europe’s post-war unity.

Los Angeles: Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music’s queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.
Publicist Kristen Foster said that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.
At her peak, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world’s best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies, where she starred in hits like ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Waiting to Exhale.’ She had the perfect voice and the perfect image: a gorgeous singer who had sex appeal but was never overtly sexual, who maintained perfect poise.
She influenced a generation of younger singers, from Christina Aguilera to Mariah Carey, who when she first came out sounded so much like Houston that many thought it was Houston.
But by the end of her career, Houston became a stunning cautionary tale of the toll of drug use. Her album sales plummeted and the hits stopped coming; her once serene image was shattered by a wild demeanor and bizarre public appearances. She confessed to abusing cocaine, marijuana and pills, and her once pristine voice became raspy and hoarse, unable to hit the high notes as she had during her prime.
‘The biggest devil is me. I’m either my best friend or my worst enemy,’ Houston told ABC’s Diane Sawyer in an infamous 2002 interview with then-husband Brown by her side.
It was a tragic fall for a superstar who was one of the top-selling artists in pop music history, with more than 55 million records sold in the United States alone.

Second Show starring the celebrity son Dulqar Salman creates a wave in theatres in kerala. Dulquar is not seen as a fresher by most of the film lovers, but as mega star Mammooty’s son. “Viewers should analyse the performance of Dulquar as a new face. Please don’t have prejudice over his star-son image.” The Director of the film,Srinath Rajendran says.
The story revolves around Lalu (Dulquar Salman) and his gang, a bunch of school drop outs who are ready to take any risk to earn a fast buck. They begin with sand mining, moving on to larger crimes and ruthless killings which end up in tragedy. Lalu loses his closest buddy and his lady love (Gauthami Nair) as he matures in crime. The inconstancy of the heroine is used to make a dig at women and their love for money and material comfort, generalizing on certain notions prevalent in our society. Again other misconceptions like the quotation team members should either smoke or drink is consistently followed filling almost all the frame with scenes of cigarette smoking or alcohol consumption!
The director (Srinath Rajendran), script writer (Vini Viswalal), cinematographer (Pappu) and lead actor Dulquar Salman are promising in their respective fields. Another aspect worth mentioning is the character Kurudi (Sunny) who steals the show many a time.

NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Vijayakanth was unceremoniously evicted from the Assembly along with his DMDK party’s MLAs after he had a verbal duel with Chief Minister Jayaram Jayalalithaa on the floor of the House in Chennai.
The DMDK had allied with AIADMK to sweep the elections in Tamil Nadu last year. They parted ways during the civic polls.
(The DMDK had won 29 seats and pushed the erstwhile ruling party DMK of Muthuve Karunanidhi to the third position. It became the main Opposition party and Vijayakanth, its Tamil actor-turned-politician got the status of Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly).
The en masse eviction came at the end of an angry exchange of words between Jayalalithaa and Vijayakanth over the recent hike in bus fares and milk prices. This triggered a clash between members of the two parties, leading to noisy scenes.
Jayalalithaa slammed Vijayakanth for his “lowly act” as he made some gestures at treasury benches. She dubbed his conduct as “obnoxious” and regretted the tie-up with his party in the assembly polls.
“I am ashamed and regret the fact that AIADMK faced the polls with unqualified persons who don’t even know how to behave after reaching the top,” she said.
Jayalalithaa said though she did not have the “slightest inclination” for the alliance, she had bowed to her partymen’s desire for it.
Referring to Vijayakanth’s conduct during the heated exchange between members of the two parties, she said DMDK’s good times “had ended and it will be downslide from now on.”
Assembly Speaker D Jayakumar referred the behaviour of the opposition to the Privileges Committee.
Jayalalithaa described the Speaker’s action as “minimum” punishment saying their act warranted suspension from the entire session.
The Speaker later ordered eviction of all DMDK members saying their behaviour was not in line with the ethos of the House.

Southern actor Dhanush, who became an overnight success across the nation thanks to the song ‘Kolaveri di’, has signed his first Bollywood project ‘Raanjhnaa’.
The movie will be directed by Aanand L.Rai of ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ fame. He says he chose Dhanush for his simplicity.
“For the past six months, I’ve been looking for a simple boy to play the lead in ‘Raanjhnaa’. My requirement was a man who could look vulnerable on screen. When I saw Dhanush in the Tamil film ‘Aadukalam’. I liked him immediately. He looks very ordinary and honest, and that was the demand of the character,” Rai said in a press statement.
If the grapevine is to be believed, the director had approached him for the movie before the success of “Kolaveri di”, sung for his Tamil film ‘3’.
Dhanush, who is iconic hero Rajinikanth’s son-in-law, is not too well versed with Hindi. But it won’t be a barrier for his Bollywood career as he is keen to explore the industry and learn the local language and culture.
“It’s a big deal to get a launch like this at the beginning of my career here. Aanand’s script is different from regular cinema; it’s one of those ‘made to make a difference’ kind of films,” said Dhanush.
What’s the movie like?
“The film is an intense love story. Just like my film ‘Tanu Weds Manu’, the film and its characters will take you to Delhi, Punjab, Chennai,” said Rai.
Both Dhanush and Rai recently visited Benaras for the film.
The actor is also perhaps planning to hire a coach to learn Hindi. He is convinced that by the time the film’s shoot gets over, he will be able to communicate fluently in Hindi, which will open more avenues for him.

Even before The Dirty Picture releases, Vidya Balan already seems prepared for a ‘different’ outing in Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani.
The film will see the actor play the character of a pregnant woman in search of her missing husband. Reportedly, the film is partially inspired by the Hollywood blockbuster Kill Bill, which was directed by Quentin Tarantino. Produced by Ghosh, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures and Pen India Private Limited, Kahaani has been extensively shot in Kolkata, which incidentally is Vidya’s favourite city.
In the past, the actor has spoken of how she could perform the role in Kahaani with utmost ease, as she would always joke with her friends about how differently women walk when they are pregnant. She also tried to copy the way they take deep breaths in between.
Trade also feels that once the euphoria around The Dirty Picture settles down, Kahaani would put Vidya in a completely different mould.
It may be interesting to watch Vidya in a completely different and unglamorous avatar after the Milan Luthria film releases.
The film starring Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi would hit theatres on January 20, 2012.
