High cholesterol is a big threat to healthy living. Hence, if you are diagnosed with high cholesterol, it is imperitive to change your eating habits, in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
As with other lifestyle-related diseases, certain foods are good and bad for people with high cholesterol. Today, we bring you some foods that can actually lower down your cholesterol level. Mrs. Eileen Canday – Chief Dietician at Breach Candy Hospital, gives us a list of the 20 best foods to lower cholesterol.
Almonds
Opt for a fistful of almonds as a daily snack, when diagnosed with high cholesterol.
Almonds are filled with vitamin E and flavonoids, which help cut bad cholesterol by almost 10 percent and also decreases the development of artery blockage.
Oats
Oats contain soluble fibre called beta-glucan, which helps in lowering your body’s ability to absorb cholesterol.
Hence, eat oats daily for breakfast, to lower your cholesterol level and stay healthy.
Avocados
Avocados have cholesterol-lowering properties because they contain beta-sitosterol, which can lower cholesterol levels by nearly 15 percent.
Olive oil
Use extra-virgin oil for cooking, instead of normal cooking oil.
Olive oil is a good heart-healthy choice, because it contains antioxidants and polyunsaturated fats that can lower bad levels of cholesterol.
Omega-3 fatty acids
Include fishes like mackerel, salmon and tuna at least twice in a week.
Fishes that are rich in omega-3 can lower cholesterol levels and aid in boosting good cholesterol. For vegetarians, choose foods like flaxseeds and rajma.
Beans and lentils
Again beans and lentils are a good source of soluble fibre, which aids in lowering cholesterol levels.
They are also high in protein and low in fat, which is a complete package for healthy hearts.
Soybean
The protein present in soybean protects against various heart ailments. Soybean helps in lowering bad cholesterol and simultaneously increases good cholesterol.
Eggplants and okra
These two vegetables are great agents for lowering cholesterol, because they are good sources of soluble fibre. But avoid frying these, as that would diminish their nutritional properties.
Garlic
Garlic helps lower cholesterol and fights plaque that clogs your arteries.
Eat not more than 3-4 garlic cloves each day, to obtain maximum heart benefits.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, vitamin C, potassium and fibre, which help in cutting cholesterol levels.
Prefer eating tomatoes which are cooked or sun-dried tomatoes.
Green tea
Results may vary from individual to individual, but some studies suggest that drinking green tea early in the morning may fight high cholesterol.
Blueberries
Compounds present in blueberries are good for your heart. Eating blueberries regularly can sharpen your mind as well as lower bad cholesterol level.
Apples
Apples contain soluble fiber called pectin, which helps in lowering bad cholesterol.
Carrots
Raw carrots contain pectin, which helps in lowering cholesterol levels. Besides, carrots are also good for your eyes and skin.
Barley
Barley has unique health promoting properties, especially for heart health.
Like oats, barley too contains beta-glucan, which helps in lowering cholesterol and prevents artery blockage.
Red wine
We all know about red wine’s health benefits. Consuming red wine helps heart health as well.
The fibre called tempranillo, found in red wine, is great in lowering cholesterol.
Plant sterol
Consuming fortified foods like orange juice and yoghurt, which have high levels of plant compounds, is good for heart health.
They help prevent cholesterol absorption and lower the level of cholesterol.
Dark chocolate
Eating dark chocolate is very beneficial for your health. It helps lower cholesterol levels by almost 10 percent.
Sesame seeds
Sesame seeds are rich in a fibre called phytosterols. This fibre helps in preventing artery blockages and lowers cholesterol levels.
Spinach
Besides spinach being Popeye’s secret for quick power, it is also good for cardiovascular health.
Green leafy vegetables like spinach contain lutein, which helps guard against blockages in arteries and lowers cholesterol.

Instead of eating an apple each day for optimum health, the adage should state that a banana each day keeps the doctor away.
The banana health benefits far outweigh those of the apple because it has many more vitamins and nutrients than their round counterparts.
Bananas have two times as many carbohydrates as an apple, five times as much Vitamin A and iron and three times as much phosphorus. In addition, bananas are also rich in potassium and natural sugars.
All of these factors combined make the banana a “super food” that is an integral part of a healthy daily regimen.
Because of the abundance of vitamins and minerals, bananas are a great source of natural energy.
Eating only two bananas will give you enough energy to exercise or workout for an hour and a half.
Bananas are also ideal for eating during that midday full when you feel tired and sluggish.
Instead of drinking caffeine or having a sugary snack, bananas provide a level of energy that lasts longer without the dramatic crash caused by caffeine.
Because they are rich in potassium, bananas help the body’s circulatory system deliver oxygen to the brain.
This also helps maintain a regular heartbeat and a proper balance of water in the body.
Potassium is also helpful for reducing strokes and regulating blood pressure because of the way it promotes circulatory health.
One of the banana health benefits is that they can help stop constipation.
Bananas have a certain type of fiber that helps to restore and maintain regular bowel functions.
Instead of using laxatives that might have chemicals or other synthetic substances, bananas are a natural source for lessening the effects of constipation without causing other bowel problems such as diarrhea.

Poor monsoon continues to put pressure on prices of staple vegetables, including tomato and potato, and could further push up retail inflation which is hovering above the double-digit mark.
Rates of key veggies are yet to show signs of coming down compared to mid-July due to supply constraint as a result of deficient rainfall across the country.
According to IMD, the country has witnessed 19 per cent rain deficiency during the season so far. It says that monsoon is expected to bring widespread showers in August but is likely to run into trouble in September (the terminal part of monsoon).
Potato which was selling at a high of Rs 20 a kg in retail in Delhi around middle of July is still ruling at the same price in and around the national capital.
Similarly, tomato which was at Rs 40 a kg then has further soared to Rs 50 a kg in Delhi and NCR, traders said.
Onion which was available at a reasonable price of Rs 10-15 a kg around July 15 has risen to Rs 20-25/kg now in Delhi and NCR.
Likewise, prices of important vegetables continue to remain on the higher side in other metros of Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai too.
Data provided by National Horticulture Research Development Foundation (NHRDF), an arm of ICAR which monitors vegetable items like onion, potato and garlic, indicate their high costs.
R P Gupta, Director NHRDF, said that deficient monsoon in June has brought down production of potato in kharif season by more than half in Karnataka, a key producer of the crop.

Beijing: China is now the world’s largest food and grocery market, having overtaken the US in terms of sales in 2011, a market research firm said.
British food industry analysts IGD also noted that BRIC countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China – will make up four of the top five grocery markets by 2015.
China’s supermarket sector was worth $970 billion at the end of 2011, surpassing the US market, valued at $913.5 billion. The rapid expansion is driven by China’s growing economy, rising wealth, and inflationary food prices, the firm said.
China’s grocery market is forecast to expand to nearly $1.46 trillion by the end of 2014, three times its worth in 2006, the China Daily reported Sunday.
The firm noted the Chinese are moving from a diet based on rice and pork to a diet of dairy products, wheat, grains and red and white meat, which helped boost global prices.
‘Despite the slowdown, measures to stimulate Chinese domestic consumption present an opportunity for retailers. For example, higher wages could boost disposable income and increase the number of potential customers,’ said Cecile Riverain, IGD’s international research manager.
